The mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. ALDF files high-impact lawsuits, provides free legal assistance and training to prosecutors, supports tough animal protection legislation, and provides resources and opportunities to law students and legal professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law. Their groundbreaking efforts are supported by the nation’s largest volunteer law professional network for animals and more than 300,000 supporters. The Animal Legal Defense Fund Pro Bono Network members assist with a variety of projects including research and writing, filing amicus briefs, litigating cases, supporting legislative efforts, and more. The Animal Legal Defense Fund also relies on our Pro Bono Network members to assist other animal nonprofit organizations, as well as members of the public facing issues such as animal custody disputes, dangerous dog designations, and landlord/tenant disputes over companion animals. This session will offer an overview of the breadth of animal law and the various levels of knowledge and skills required for practice. We will discuss relevant fields of law intersecting with animal law, such as administrative, constitutional, criminal, and property as well as laws relating to wildlife, companion animals, ocean life, and farmed animals. We will consider litigation, legislative, lobbying, and policy work in our discussion. Speakers Yolanda Eisenstein is an animal lawyer with more than 20 years of experience in animal protection law and advocacy. While in Dallas, Texas, she had a solo practice in animal law and was an adjunct professor of animal law and wildlife law at SMU Dedman School of Law. She is president of the Animal Law Commission of the Paris-based Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), an international association of lawyers. She represents the UIA at the United Nations in the areas of sustainability and artificial intelligence. Her books include Careers in Animal Law, The American Bar Association Guide to Dog Laws, Wildlife Law and Ethics (co-editor), and A Guide to Representing Animal Protection Organizations (co-editor). Joan E. Schaffner (ze/zir) is Associate Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School. Ze received a BS in mechanical engineering (magna cum laude) and J.D. (Order of the Coif) from the University of Southern California and a MS in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Joan has taught Civil Procedure, Legislation and Regulation, Remedies and Sexuality and the Law. Ze is the editor-in-chief of the American Intellectual Property Law Association Quarterly Journal.
